Good university facility management ensures a whole campus – from the athletics track to the air-conditioning – is always running smoothly. It makes the campus an attractive and welcoming place to spend time. And crucially, it makes university buildings safe and operational.

In short, quality facility management is absolutely crucial to the successful running of any higher education institution. But it isn’t always easy to come by.

With campuses continuing to grow as the global university building boom continues, finding providers that can handle the capacity is a special thing. So when a university does find it, they hold on tight.

That’s exactly what the University of Miami is doing with the renewal of a multi-year contract with leading facility solutions provider, ABM.

The ABM Education team has a long-running relationship with the university, dating back to 2014. The company covers a whole range of services, including custodial services, sports turf field and grounds maintenance, moving, and pest control services.

While that’s a big undertaking at any university, the home of UM is a particularly big job.

The university’s main campus, the Coral Gables campus, is home to two colleges and seven schools and is located on a 239-acre tract in Coral Gables.

“The ABM team has done an outstanding job for us and we are excited to continue our relationship,” the University of Miami Vice President of Facilities Operations & Planning, Jessica Brumley, said in a press release.

“ABM’s high performance standards enable our faculty, staff and students to focus on living our mission to transform lives through education, research, innovation and service.”

Universities understand the value of retaining the services of a high-quality facility manager. They have been found to keep costs down, not only through facility upkeep, but ensuring campuses are operating at peak energy levels.

A 2016 study published in Science Direct found the operational strategies of university facility management can contribute to reducing building energy use. Results showed that proactive operations and maintenance strategies in existing buildings contribute towards significantly improving energy performance.

By providing day-to-day analysis, and ensuring all aspects of an institution are working in unison, they keep the organisations running at peak efficiency, saving money on bills, resources, and ensure sustainability targets are met.

“ABM is honored to continue our strong partnership with the University of Miami,” said Senior Vice President of Operations for Education at ABM, Trey Brock.

“This contract renewal is a clear show of confidence in our team’s commitment to providing service excellence, operational technology and best practices that ensure a clean and safe environment for faculty and staff, students and visitors.”
