The recent resurgence of the Black Lives Matter protests shone a brighter spotlight on the urgent need for companies today to provide diversity and inclusion training programmes for employees at all levels.

Several studies have shown that companies with higher rates of diversity see improvements in areas such as financial performance and productivity, and enhanced levels of creativity and innovation.

Yet, companies were found lagging behind in diversity training and efforts to hire more ethnically diverse staff, even cutting budgets for training due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Geri Stengel wrote on Forbes, “Rage turned to action and Black Lives Matter protest rallies erupted around the world. Pushed by employees and fear of losing customers, companies pledged to play a prominent role in combating racism.”

Companies now have a renewed sense of responsibility to offer diversity and inclusion training programmes in the global fight towards a more fair and just society.

If you’re a business leader and looking to offer diversity and inclusion training for your staff and managers, there are a number of online courses to check out that are not only cost-effective, but easy to deliver to those who are working remotely.

These programmes educate employees and supervisors on workplace diversity, fair hiring and promoting practices, and how to build inclusive teams.

Here are top four online diversity and training programmes in 2020:

Diversity and Inclusion Cornell Certificate programme

Delivered through eCornell, Cornell University offers an online certificate course that takes approximately two weeks to complete, at a fee of USD $3600 or $950 per month, suitable for managers and HR professionals.

This is one of the top courses as it promises to improve employee engagement levels, enhance organisational culture, recognise unconscious bias, and assess stereotypes and prejudices, and teach methods to improve the psychological safety of all employees.

Participants will also receive a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate from Cornell ILR school as well as 32 Professional Development hours.

Diversity Works

This detailed three-hour workshop “game” by HRDQ, a coaching and training tool provider, is designed to get adult learners out of their seat and engage in station-based activities, fostering an interactive learning experience.

SmallBusiness chose this game as the best diversity training initiative because training is interactive, which allows for both cooperation and team-building. Additionally, the game is sold at USD$999 which works out to just $40 per employee for a team of 25.

The product comes with a setup guide, Facilitator’s Guide, and the activity and participant materials in one convenient box. Learning outcomes include understanding others and how to build respectful communication skills.

According to the website, “Part experiential, part social, and part emotional, the Diversity Works learning style model encourages learners to explore and absorb content at their speed and direction. It puts learners in the best position to succeed.”

Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace

Delivered on Coursera by Essec Business School, this course providers learners with knowledge on diversity concepts, why diversity and inclusion are important for firms,  how to develop skills to identify diversity issues in the workplace, and strategies to apply what you’ve learned.

This course is not for passive learners as you will be required to complete assignments and participate on discussion threads.

It takes approximately nine hours to complete, and you can earn a shareable certificate when the course is done. The course fee is USD $49 or you can audit for free.

Inclusive Leadership

Another top course for leaders and managers is this one delivered on EdX. Learners will be able to acquire in0demand skills necessary to build an inclusive workplace culture in this Professional Certificate programme.

The course description reads, “Accelerate your career with this Inclusive Leadership Training program. You will learn how to apply inclusive leadership skills—Empowerment, Accountability, Courage, and Humility (“EACH”)—and have the opportunity to practice using them to foster team citizenship and innovation.”

The course takes about four weeks to complete, and is now offered at a discounted fee for $135.
