The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects a positive job growth rate in many sustainability careers, including environmental engineers, conservation scientists, environmental specialists, urban planners, and community services managers.

Renewable energy reflects another robust field, especially wind power, where technicians can expect a staggering 96% growth in jobs through 2026.

According to Payscale, entry-level sustainability coordinators can expect $45,282 as their average salary.  Professionals with a graduate degree and advanced certification may occupy roles as sustainability managers, with an average salary that is around $71,044.

Specialisations for a master’s studies in sustainability

Master’s degrees in sustainability studies is an interdisciplinary field. This qualification will equip students with the skills and knowledge across a broad range of areas. These areas include the science and politics of climate change, poverty and development, corporate social responsibility, ethics and focuses heavily on the impacts of business on the environment.

Master’s of sustainability programmes may be offered by various departments in a university due to its interdisciplinary nature.

The nature of the programme offers students rich, cohesive learning experiences, and departments that may offer this specialisation include anthropology, philosophy, management, economics, business, political science, environmental studies, or even art and design.

Business schools are also moving in a similar direction, by making sustainability part of the core MBA curriculum. These MBAs are also referred to as green MBAs focus specifically on sustainability and business success and ethics, on top of the solid framework of a conventional MBA qualification.
