Boosting your resilience at work is essential – here’s how you can do it

Tight deadlines, dealing with taxing personalities at work, worrying about job insecurity amidst a pandemic while balancing your personal life is enough to leave anyone feeling frazzled. Combined with the pressures of digital transformation, many professionals are hustling to respond efficiently to life’s disruptions. No doubt, building resilience in the workplace is more essential than ever in this day and age.

It’s unsurprising that the World Health Organization has classified stress as the health epidemic of the 21st century. However, the ability to bounce back from adversity and to push past setbacks are some of the characteristics of resilience individuals. 

Psychotherapist Joshua Miles explained that resilience is important as it enables us to develop mechanisms for protection against experiences which could be overwhelming, helps us to maintain balance in our lives during difficult or stressful periods, and to protect us from developing mental health difficulties and issues.

According to studies, resilience can change over time and is not necessarily an innate trait. 

Longitudinal studies with children have shown that several elements predicted resilience, including luck (such as having the support of loved ones), others psychological (such as having an “internal locus of control”, or the believe that they, and not their circumstances, affect their achievements), reported The New Yorker.

However, sometimes, stressors in life can become so intense that resilience is overwhelmed as most people have a breaking point. Conversely, those who weren’t resilient when they were little somehow learned to be resilient.

Despite that, anyone can develop resilience. 


Fostering workplace resilience

From juniors to company leaders, building resilience in the workplace is essential to help individuals thrive despite the challenges that swim their way. While it might sound counterintuitive to learn about resilience via workshops or courses, these can provide you with a theoretical understanding of resilience to improve your mental state of mind. 

Be it via workshops, microcredentials, or executive education, these courses cover different areas and may target individuals at different levels. 

Coursera, for instance, offers a course on Resilience Skills in a Time of Uncertainty, which teaches individuals how to incorporate resilience interventions into their personal and professional life. You’ll be exposed to the foundational research in resilience, including protective factors such as mental agility and optimism. 

“Several types of resilience interventions are explored including cognitive strategies; strategies to manage anxiety and increase positive emotions such as gratitude; and a critical relationship enhancement skill. Throughout the course, you will hear examples of individuals using resilience skills in their personal and professional lives,” notes its website.

Wharton, on the other hand, offers Global Resilient Leadership, an executive education course for mid- and senior-level executives from a range of industries. The course leverages the knowledge and experience of senior Nissan executives. 


“Participants will come away with a deeper understanding of the need for change and how to make it happen. A number of sessions with these Nissan leaders will dig deeper into the successful strategies that transformed their organization. These live case studies include interactive dialogues that address participants’ questions and concerns,” noted Wharton. 

With a better understanding of resilience interventions and learning about strategies to control one’s emotions, professionals may be better equipped to face the challenges that come their way.
